OPEN QUESTIONS

Where readers have differed

The writer, to show Jeremiah's danger

Ellicott's commentary; C. F. Keil (1874–1880); the Pulpit Commentary; A. W. Streane (1913)

It is not part of the elders' speech: Ellicott says it “cannot be regarded as part of the argument of the ‘elders’”; Streane: “The story is introduced by the compiler (probably Baruch) to illustrate the risk to which Jeremiah was exposed”; Keil: to show “the hostility of King Jehoiakim”. Jeremiah 26:20–24 [20][63][99][102]

The elders, as a warning

R. Jamieson, A. R. Fausset and D. Brown (1871); one opinion reported by Joseph Benson

JFB: the context “implies rather that the words are the continuation of the previous speech of the elders”: Urijah suffered, and they imply that “sin has been added”. Jeremiah 26:17–23 [54][6]

Jeremiah's accusers, as a precedent for death

Matthew Poole (1683–1685); John Gill (1748–1763), after Kimchi and Rashi

Poole: “the words of some others … urging a later precedent, in the time of Jehoiakim”; Gill reports Kimchi and Jarchi (Rashi) reading it so. Jeremiah 26:20–23 [85][39]

WHAT SCRIPTURE DOES NOT SAY

  • Jeremiah does not record any of Urijah's words, only that they agreed with Jeremiah's.
  • It does not give the year of his death; the chapter's opening date (“the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim”, Jeremiah 26:1) belongs to Jeremiah's own trial.
  • Scripture does not say he was beheaded; it says Jehoiakim “slew him with the sword”.
