OPEN QUESTIONS

Where readers have differed

Azariah's, and some words have dropped out

C. F. Keil (1872); W. E. Barnes (1899); Ellicott's commentary (c. 1878–1884)

W. E. Barnes: “Some words have fallen out of the text. Read, Even the prophecy which Azariah the son of Oded prophesied.” Keil sees no solution but a gloss or a gap; Ellicott suggests “Oded the prophet” may be a marginal gloss and notes there is “no variation in Heb. MSS.” The Latin Vulgate reads “the prophecy of Azarias the son of Oded the prophet” (Douay-Rheims); the Greek reads “the prophecy of Adad the prophet” (Brenton). 2 Chronicles 15:8 [109][60][13][103][7]

Azariah's, called by his father's name

Matthew Poole (1683–1685); Joseph Benson (1811–1818); John Gill (1748–1763)

Poole: “Of Azariah … who was also called by his father’s name Oded”, or “the son of” is understood; Gill: “rather Oded here is the same with the son of Oded”. 2 Chronicles 15:1 2 Chronicles 15:8 [82][4][34]

A prophecy of Oded the father, not recorded

“Some”, as reported by Poole and Gill; the Pulpit Commentary allows it

Azariah may have repeated an older prophecy of his father. The Pulpit Commentary says this is “open to possibility” but “not very likely”. 2 Chronicles 15:8 [82][34][90]

Oded is Iddo

Jerome, as reported by the Jewish Encyclopedia (1904)

Jerome “identifies Iddo also with the Oded of II Chron. xv. 8”; Keil calls this conjecture without “tenable foundation”. 2 Chronicles 15:8 [48][58]
