THE CALL

How the word came

  • “Then the word of the LORD came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha”; Kings says it came again “by the hand of the prophet Jehu”. 1 Kings 16:1 1 Kings 16:7
  • Chronicles names “the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel”. 2 Chronicles 20:34
  • Scholars' viewThe same name and father are given under Baasha and under Jehoshaphat, more than thirty years apart; commentators take him to be one man (the Jewish Encyclopedia: he “must have either lived to a very great age or begun his prophetical career very young”). 1 Kings 16:1 2 Chronicles 19:2 [50][92][111]

HOW THE STORY ENDS

Scripture says, tradition says

SCRIPTURE SAYS

  • He was alive to meet Jehoshaphat, and Chronicles names his book as the record of Jehoshaphat's acts; it does not tell of his death. 2 Chronicles 19:2 2 Chronicles 20:34

TRADITION SAYS

  • The Latin Vulgate reads 1 Kings 16:7 as Baasha killing Jehu: “for this cause he slew him, that is to say, Jehu the son of Hanani, the prophet” (Douay-Rheims). Chronicles, which has Jehu meet Jehoshaphat later, does not fit this reading. 1 Kings 16:7 2 Chronicles 19:2 [103][50] Who says so: The Latin Vulgate (Jerome's translation), as printed in the Clementine edition, about AD 400; printed 1598

OPEN QUESTIONS

Where readers have differed

Nadab, Jeroboam's son

Matthew Poole (1683–1685); Joseph Benson (1811–1818); the Pulpit Commentary (1880–1897)

Poole: “i.e. Nadab; who, though he be not expressed, yet is sufficiently understood”; Baasha killed Nadab (1 Kings 15:27–28). 1 Kings 16:7 1 Kings 15:27–28 [77][2][87]

Jeroboam's whole house

Abarbanel, as reported by John Gill

Gill reports that it “may refer, as Abarbinel thinks, to the whole house of Jeroboam”; he himself prefers Nadab. 1 Kings 16:7 1 Kings 15:29 [30]

Jehu the prophet

The Latin Vulgate

The Vulgate adds words that the Douay-Rheims renders “that is to say, Jehu the son of Hanani, the prophet”; the Jewish Encyclopedia calls this a gloss. 1 Kings 16:7 [103][50]

WHAT SCRIPTURE DOES NOT SAY

  • Scripture does not say where Jehu lived, or how he came from prophesying against Israel's king to meeting Judah's.
  • It does not tell of his death; the Vulgate's reading of 1 Kings 16:7 is shown under Tradition.
  • This Jehu is a different man from Jehu son of Nimshi, who became king of Israel (2 Kings 9:2).
