Jar with Horn-Shaped Handles
100s CE · Korea, Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE–668 CE) · earthenware with impressed surface designs
The Cleveland Museum of Art. John L. Severance Fund CC0
Although the function of this earthenware vessel remains unknown, its low-fired red surface indicates the various steps in its fabrication. First, coils of clay were layered on top of one another and pinched together to form the wall of the pot. Then wood mallets with carved surfaces pounded these walls simultaneously, inside and out, merging and thinning the clay bands. Thus the impressed designs visible on both…

Minted in Rome, this coin depicts the triumphal arch erected there in 44 AD commemorating Claudius in the campaign in Britain. On top of the arch is the emperor seated on a horse between two military trophies. The arch itself was a converted aqueduct which crossed the main road leading north toward Rome. Claudius was the youngest of the three surviving children of Drusus and Antonia Minor and the first Roman emperor…

Cameo: Head of a Woman
1–100 CE · Italy, Roman · amethyst
The Cleveland Museum of Art. Bequest of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. CC0
This carved amethyst cameo depicts a woman wearing a laurel wreath and a palla, a cloak worn by Roman noblewomen. The palla is tucked behind the woman’s ears and is visible over her right shoulder. She may have been a member of the Julio-Claudian imperial family or a wealthy private individual. In her hairstyle, straight nose, and small but full mouth the woman closely resembles portrait cameos identified…

Cameo: Julio-Claudian Imperial Portrait
30 BCE–54 CE · Italy, Rome, Early Imperial period · travertine
The Cleveland Museum of Art. John L. Severance Fund CC0
This fragment of a cameo depicts a man wearing a laurel crown and facing right. Roman cameo gems were made by carving through layers of banded semiprecious stones to create an image, here a portrait in off-white with a tan background. Scholars have identified this portrait as various members of the Julio-Claudian imperial family based on the laurel crown and style of the portrait.

The close-cropped wavy…

20 BCE–10 CE · England, Trinovantes · gold
The Cleveland Museum of Art. The Norweb Collection CC0
Dubnovellaunus was the king of the area around Kent. He was a warlike ruler and at various times possessed territory on both sides of the Thames. He may have succeeded Addedomaros by conquest and ruled over the Trinovantes. He undoubtedly suffered defeat at the hands of Cunobeline of the Catuvellauni and was forced back to Kent. He was one of the British chieftains mentioned with Tincommius on the monument to…
