STANZA I
The Lord of glory reigns; he reigns on high
The Lord of glory reigns; he reigns on high;
His robes of state are strength and majesty:
This wide creation rose at his command,
Built by his word, and 'stablish'd by his hand:
Long stood his throne ere he began creation,
And his own Godhead is the firm foundation.
The psalm it sets
Watts made this hymn from Psalm 93, "in the language of the New Testament": a paraphrase, not a translation. The line that comes closest to it is marked.
1The LORD reigns! He is robed in majesty; the LORD has clothed and armed Himself with strength. The world indeed is firmly established; it cannot be moved. 2Your throne was established long ago; You are from all eternity. 3The floodwaters have risen, O LORD; the rivers have raised their voice; the seas lift up their pounding waves. 4Above the roar of many waters— the mighty breakers of the sea— the LORD on high is majestic. … 1 more verses PSALM 93 · ITS FIRST VERSES · BEREAN STANDARD BIBLE READ PSALM 93
