STANZA I

Loud hallelujahs to the Lord

Loud hallelujahs to the Lord,

From distant worlds where creatures dwell:

Let heaven begin the solemn word,

And sound it dreadful down to hell.

No line of this stanza quotes a verse closely; it is the hymn's own confession.

The psalm it sets

Watts made this hymn from Psalm 148, "in the language of the New Testament": a paraphrase, not a translation. The line that comes closest to it is marked.

1Hallelujah! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the highest places. 2Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, all His heavenly hosts. 3Praise Him, O sun and moon; praise Him, all you shining stars. 4Praise Him, O highest heavens, and you waters above the skies. … 10 more verses PSALM 148 · ITS FIRST VERSES · BEREAN STANDARD BIBLE READ PSALM 148
