STANZA I

That man is blest who stands in awe

Of God, and loves his sacred law:

His seed on earth shall be renown'd;

His house the seat of wealth shall be,

An inexhausted treasury,

And with successive honours crown'd.

The psalm it sets

Watts made this hymn from Psalm 112, "in the language of the New Testament": a paraphrase, not a translation. The line that comes closest to it is marked.

1Hallelujah! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in His commandments. 2His descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4Light dawns in the darkness for the upright— for the gracious, compassionate, and righteous. … 6 more verses PSALM 112 · ITS FIRST VERSES · BEREAN STANDARD BIBLE READ PSALM 112
