Ere the blue heavens were stretch'd abroad,

From everlasting was the Word;

With God he was; the Word was God,

And must divinely be ador'd.

Where Watts found it

Watts printed the hymn under John 1:1–3, 14. The line that comes closest to it is marked.

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. 14The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. JOHN 1:1–3, 14 · BEREAN STANDARD BIBLE READ JOHN 1
