Can a reasonable person believe in miracles?
God acts in his world; not every remarkable report is true.
THE STARTING ANSWER
Yes. The Creator is not imprisoned by the ordinary patterns of his creation. Christianity depends on God's supernatural acts, supremely Christ's resurrection. That conviction does not require us to accept every claim of a miracle: Scripture itself commands discernment.

FOLLOW THE REASONING
From the claim to the conclusion.
God both sustains ordinary events and is free to act beyond ordinary means.
- Westminster5.2–3
The resurrection is essential to the gospel, not an optional embellishment.
- 1 Corinthians 15:12–22
An impressive sign is not sufficient grounds for receiving false teaching.
- Deuteronomy 13:1–4
We should confess the miracles God reveals and test additional reports without confusing wonder with truth.
- John 20:30–31
- 1 John 4:1
Read the event in its setting
John records signs so that readers may believe Jesus is the Christ. Their meaning concerns his identity, not merely the occurrence of something unusual. Read what the author says the sign demonstrates.
- John 20:30–31
Discernment belongs to faith
Ask what occurred, what the witnesses claim and whether an explanation goes beyond their testimony. Those are practical applications of testing claims. A sincere or moving story should not be treated as automatically reliable.
- Proverbs 18:17
- 1 Thessalonians 5:21
- 1 John 4:1
TAKE THE OBJECTION SERIOUSLY
A miracle contradicts the regularity of nature.
Regularity describes God's ordinary ordering of the world; it does not establish his inability to act exceptionally. The historical question about a particular event still deserves careful examination.
- Westminster5.2–3
- R. C. SproulGod's supernatural action
An unexplained event does not by itself identify its cause or authenticate a religion. Scripture warns that impressive signs can accompany deception.
- Matthew 24:24
- Deuteronomy 13:1–4
CARRY IT INTO A CONVERSATION
Could we distinguish the possibility of God's action from the evidence for this particular report?
- Proverbs 18:17
