# How can a good God allow suffering?

Document: study/suffering

God is sovereign and good; evil is real, and Christ is our hope.

Topic: doubt
Keywords: evil, pain, grief, loss, providence, theodicy

## Starting answer

<!-- block: answer -->
God governs all things without becoming the author of sin. Scripture never asks us to call evil good. It shows him bringing good through what creatures intend for evil, supremely at Christ's cross. We know his character and promises without knowing his hidden purpose in every loss.

Basis: Genesis 50:20; Acts 2:23-24; [Westminster Assembly · OPC text — 3.1; 5.4](https://opc.org/wcf.html); [R. C. Sproul · Romans sermon, Ligonier Ministries — Romans 8:28 and Genesis 50:20](https://learn.ligonier.org/sermons/suffering-glory-part-2)

## Reasoning 1

<!-- block: reason-1 -->
Joseph names his brothers' intention as evil and God's intention in the same events as good.

Basis: Genesis 50:20

## Reasoning 2

<!-- block: reason-2 -->
Jesus was delivered according to God's purpose, yet those who crucified him acted wickedly.

Basis: Acts 2:23

## Reasoning 3

<!-- block: reason-3 -->
For those who love God, suffering cannot defeat his purpose of conforming them to Christ.

Basis: Romans 8:28-30

## Conclusion

<!-- block: conclusion -->
Our hope rests in God's sovereign goodness and the risen Christ, not in pretending we can explain every tragedy.

Basis: Romans 8:31-39; Deuteronomy 29:29

## More than a free-will answer

<!-- block: section-1 -->
A reply that treats suffering as outside God's government fails to express the Reformed confession. Scripture holds together divine purpose and creaturely responsibility. It does not portray God as helpless before human decisions or blind natural forces.

Basis: Ephesians 1:11; Acts 4:27-28; [R. C. Sproul · Romans sermon, Ligonier Ministries — God's purpose without excusing evil](https://learn.ligonier.org/sermons/suffering-glory-part-2)

## Lament belongs to faith

<!-- block: section-2 -->
Jesus weeps at Lazarus's tomb. The Psalms give words for anguish. When someone is grieving, listening and weeping with them may be the first faithful response. God's promises do not require them to disguise pain.

Basis: John 11:32-36; Psalms 13:1-6; Romans 12:15

## Objection

Does a good purpose make evil acceptable?

## Reply

<!-- block: reply -->
No. The brothers' evil remained evil, and the crucifixion involved guilty human action. God's power to redeem suffering does not authorise us to inflict, conceal or excuse it.

Basis: Genesis 50:20; Acts 2:23; Romans 3:8

## Scope and limits

<!-- block: limit -->
Romans 8:28 is a promise to those who love God, not a claim that every event feels good. Do not announce the secret reason for someone's loss as if God had revealed it to you.

Basis: Romans 8:28; Deuteronomy 29:29; [R. C. Sproul · Romans sermon, Ligonier Ministries — The recipients and meaning of the promise](https://learn.ligonier.org/sermons/suffering-glory-part-2)

## Conversation starter · editorial application

<!-- block: conversation -->
Would it help more to discuss the question now, or to have someone listen and grieve with you?

Basis: Romans 12:15; James 1:19

For Romans 8:28 and Genesis 50:20: God's good purpose and human evil intentions can concern the same event. The promise belongs to those who love God; it does not make evil good.

Our subordinate doctrinal standard for these guides. Citations specify chapter and paragraph. Scripture judges the confession itself (1.10); the confession does not replace Scripture.
