# Do Christians and Muslims mean the same thing by Jesus?

Document: study/islam-jesus

Shared names do not remove the decisive question of his identity.

Topic: worldviews
Keywords: Islam, Muslim, prophet, Messiah, Son of God

## Starting answer

<!-- block: answer -->
There is overlap in vocabulary, but a decisive disagreement. Christianity confesses Jesus as the eternal Son, truly God and truly man. Qur'an 4:171 calls him Messiah and messenger while rejecting the language of three and God's having a son. Honour for Jesus as a messenger is not the same confession as worship of the incarnate Son.

Basis: John 1:1-14; [Westminster Assembly · OPC text — 8.2](https://opc.org/wcf.html); [Qur’an · Quran.com translations — 4:171](https://quran.com/en/an-nisa/171)

## Reasoning 1

<!-- block: reason-1 -->
John identifies the Word as God and says that the Word became flesh.

Basis: John 1:1-3; John 1:14

## Reasoning 2

<!-- block: reason-2 -->
Qur'an 4:171 places its statements about Jesus within an explicit rejection of divine sonship.

Basis: [Qur’an · Quran.com translations — 4:171](https://quran.com/en/an-nisa/171)

## Reasoning 3

<!-- block: reason-3 -->
Thomas's confession to Jesus as Lord and God shows why the difference is substantive.

Basis: John 20:28-31

## Conclusion

<!-- block: conclusion -->
We should explain the actual disagreement honestly while treating a Muslim neighbour with gentleness and respect.

Basis: 1 Peter 3:15-16; [Westminster Assembly · OPC text — 8.2](https://opc.org/wcf.html)

## Sonship is not biological procreation

<!-- block: section-1 -->
The Christian claim concerns the Son's eternal relation to the Father, not God producing a child by a sexual act. The incarnation is the eternal Son taking human nature. Distinguish these claims before answering an objection.

Basis: John 1:1-14; [Westminster Assembly · OPC text — 2.3; 8.2](https://opc.org/wcf.html)

## Read each text in its own voice

<!-- block: section-2 -->
Read John 1 and Qur'an 4:171 in full. Do not turn the Qur'an's references to Jesus as a word or spirit into an admission of Nicene theology; the passage states its own boundaries. Ask your neighbour how they understand the text.

Basis: [Qur’an · Quran.com translations — 4:171 in context](https://quran.com/en/an-nisa/171); John 1:1-18

## Objection

Isn't calling Jesus a great prophet enough?

## Reply

<!-- block: reply -->
It does not match the Gospel's presentation of his identity. Jesus says the Son is to receive the honour given to the Father; Christian faith centres on who he is and what he accomplished.

Basis: John 5:22-24

## Scope and limits

<!-- block: limit -->
A primary text establishes a teaching to discuss; it does not tell you everything a particular Muslim believes. Let the person explain their own understanding.

Basis: Proverbs 18:13; [Qur’an · Quran.com translations — The claim stated in 4:171](https://quran.com/en/an-nisa/171)

What do you understand Christians to mean by Son of God, and could we compare that with John's account?

## Sources and their limits

### Qur’an 4:171 [q4171]

Qur’an · Quran.com translations · Primary record · not a teaching authority

[Read source](https://quran.com/en/an-nisa/171)

A primary passage addressing Jesus and the language of three. Read its whole statement rather than an isolated phrase.

### Westminster Confession of Faith [wcf]

Westminster Assembly · OPC text · Reformed confession

[Read source](https://opc.org/wcf.html)

Our subordinate doctrinal standard for these guides. Citations specify chapter and paragraph. Scripture judges the confession itself (1.10); the confession does not replace Scripture.
