# Why does God sometimes seem absent?

Document: study/hiddenness

Bring darkness to God; anchor assurance in Christ.

Topic: doubt
Keywords: silence, doubt, assurance, absence, prayer

## Starting answer

<!-- block: answer -->
A sense of God's absence is real distress, but it is not a reliable measure of his existence or faithfulness. Scripture gives believers prayers of lament and grounds assurance in God's promises, especially his giving of the Son. We may cry to him without pretending to feel what we do not feel.

Basis: Psalms 13:1-6; Romans 8:31-32; [Sinclair Ferguson · Things Unseen, Ligonier Ministries — The Father giving his Son](https://learn.ligonier.org/podcasts/things-unseen-with-sinclair-ferguson/who-can-be-against-us)

## Reasoning 1

<!-- block: reason-1 -->
The Psalms include faithful people asking how long God will seem hidden.

Basis: Psalms 13:1-2

## Reasoning 2

<!-- block: reason-2 -->
God has made himself known in creation and supremely in his Son.

Basis: Romans 1:19-20; Hebrews 1:1-3

## Reasoning 3

<!-- block: reason-3 -->
The believer's assurance rests in God's saving promise, not uninterrupted emotional certainty.

Basis: Romans 8:31-39; [Westminster Assembly · OPC text — 18.2–4](https://opc.org/wcf.html)

## Conclusion

<!-- block: conclusion -->
In darkness, turn toward the God who has spoken in Christ rather than making the strength of your feelings the foundation of faith.

Basis: Hebrews 1:1-3; [Sinclair Ferguson · Things Unseen, Ligonier Ministries — Romans 8:31–32](https://learn.ligonier.org/podcasts/things-unseen-with-sinclair-ferguson/who-can-be-against-us)

## Distinguish two questions

<!-- block: section-1 -->
Someone may be asking why God does not provide a requested sign, or why a believer feels abandoned. Scripture addresses both our accountability to God's revelation and the anguish of his people. Ask which concern is being expressed before replying.

Basis: Romans 1:18-23; Psalms 42:9-11

## Use the ordinary means of grace

<!-- block: section-2 -->
Return to Scripture, prayer and the fellowship of the church. These are ordinary ways God sustains faith; they are not a formula guaranteeing an immediate feeling. Assurance can be shaken without God's saving hold on his people being lost.

Basis: Hebrews 10:23-25; [Westminster Assembly · OPC text — 14.1; 18.4](https://opc.org/wcf.html)

## Objection

If God loved me, wouldn't I always sense his presence?

## Reply

<!-- block: reply -->
Scripture does not promise uninterrupted felt assurance. Look to the Father who gave his Son and to his promises in Christ; bring the feeling of abandonment honestly into prayer.

Basis: Psalms 13:1-6; [Sinclair Ferguson · Things Unseen, Ligonier Ministries — God's love shown in the gift of Christ](https://learn.ligonier.org/podcasts/things-unseen-with-sinclair-ferguson/who-can-be-against-us)

## Scope and limits

<!-- block: limit -->
We should not diagnose every season of darkness as someone's specific sin or claim to know why God permits it. His revealed promises guide us; his secret purposes are not ours to declare.

Basis: Deuteronomy 29:29; John 9:1-3

## Conversation starter · editorial application

Are you asking for reasons to believe, or describing a season when the God you trust feels far away?

Basis: James 1:19

For assurance grounded in the Father giving his Son (Romans 8:31–32), rather than in interpreting every changing circumstance as a verdict on God's love.
