# If salvation is a gift, why do good works matter?

Document: study/grace

Justified by faith alone; renewed for a life of obedience.

Topic: faith
Keywords: faith alone, imputation, justification, sanctification, foundation

## Starting answer

<!-- block: answer -->
God justifies sinners by grace alone, through faith alone, on the basis of Christ's righteousness alone. Our works do not contribute to that verdict. The same grace renews us, so genuine faith bears fruit in repentance, love and obedience. Justification and sanctification are inseparable benefits, but they are not the same thing.

Basis: Romans 4:4-8; Ephesians 2:8-10; [John Calvin · Institutes III.11, Ligonier excerpt — Institutes III.11](https://learn.ligonier.org/articles/of-justification-by-faith)

## Reasoning 1

<!-- block: reason-1 -->
We are dead in sins and made alive by God's mercy; salvation begins in his grace.

Basis: Ephesians 2:1-5

## Reasoning 2

<!-- block: reason-2 -->
Faith receives Christ and his righteousness rather than offering our achievements to God.

Basis: Philippians 3:8-9

## Reasoning 3

<!-- block: reason-3 -->
Those saved by grace are created in Christ for good works.

Basis: Ephesians 2:8-10

## Conclusion

<!-- block: conclusion -->
Good works are the fruit of salvation, never the price of God's justifying acceptance.

Basis: Titus 3:4-8; [Westminster Assembly · OPC text — 11.1–2; 16.2](https://opc.org/wcf.html)

## A verdict and a changed life

<!-- block: section-1 -->
Justification concerns pardon and being counted righteous in Christ. Sanctification concerns the Spirit's real renewal of our lives. Our growth remains imperfect; it must not become the ground of our peace with God.

Basis: Romans 5:1; Hebrews 10:14; [John Calvin · Institutes III.11, Ligonier excerpt — Institutes III.11: righteousness received through faith](https://learn.ligonier.org/articles/of-justification-by-faith)

## Even faith is a gift

<!-- block: section-2 -->
We cannot boast that we supplied the decisive goodness God lacked. Augustine's chapter 17 is useful here: God's mercy gives faith, and good works follow. This limited agreement does not make all of Augustine's account of justification identical to the Reformed confession.

Basis: Ephesians 2:8-9; [Augustine of Hippo · New Advent edition — Chapter 17](https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/1510.htm); [Westminster Assembly · OPC text — 11.1–2](https://opc.org/wcf.html)

## Objection

Does faith alone give us permission to live however we please?

## Reply

<!-- block: reply -->
No. Paul rejects continuing in sin so that grace may abound. Living faith produces obedience; James condemns a merely verbal profession without fruit. Works evidence life rather than purchase it.

Basis: Romans 6:1-4; James 2:14-18

## Scope and limits

<!-- block: limit -->
Neither a profession of faith nor a moving testimony excuses ongoing harm. Repentance must bear fruit, while our confidence for forgiveness rests in Christ.

Basis: Matthew 3:8; 1 John 1:8-9

## Conversation starter · editorial application

<!-- block: conversation -->
Are you resting in Christ's finished work, or trying to make yourself worthy enough to be accepted?

Basis: Romans 4:4-5

## Sources and their limits

### On Grace and Free Will, chapter 17 [augustine-grace]

Augustine of Hippo · New Advent edition · Historic Christian witness

[Read source](https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/1510.htm)

Limited use: faith is God's gift and good works follow it. Augustine predates the Reformation. This citation does not equate his entire account of justification with the Reformed confession.

### Of Justification by Faith [calvin-justification]

John Calvin · Institutes III.11, Ligonier excerpt · Reformed exposition

[Read source](https://learn.ligonier.org/articles/of-justification-by-faith)

For forgiveness and Christ's righteousness received through faith alone, distinguished from the believer's renewal and works. Do not treat faith itself as a meritorious achievement.

### Westminster Confession of Faith [wcf]

Westminster Assembly · OPC text · Reformed confession

[Read source](https://opc.org/wcf.html)

Our subordinate doctrinal standard for these guides. Citations specify chapter and paragraph. Scripture judges the confession itself (1.10); the confession does not replace Scripture.
